2026 Hungarian Grand Prix Recap: Results, Penalties, and a Dramatic Afternoon at the Hungaroring
Lando Norris took his first grand prix victory of his championship defence at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix. Between a thrilling McLaren battle, a late Ferrari collapse, and grid penalties that reshuffled the front rows, this was one of the more dramatic weekends of the season at the Hungaroring.
I was on the ground in Budapest for this one, and I can say firsthand that it lived up to every bit of its reputation. Qualifying Results: A Photo Finish for Pole
Qualifying in Budapest came down to just 0.012 seconds between Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton, the tightest margin for pole all season. Here is how Q3 finished:

It marked Norris's first pole position of the season and ended Mercedes's run of ten consecutive poles.
The Penalties That Rewrote the Grid
Qualifying results rarely tell the full story at the Hungaroring, and this weekend was no exception. Two separate penalties changed the front of the grid before a single lap of the race had been run.
Lewis Hamilton was handed a three place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri during Q3, dropping him from second on the timesheet to fifth on the grid. Kimi Antonelli received the same three place penalty for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags, which had been caused by a Verstappen spin late in the session. That dropped him from fourth to seventh.

Sergio Perez, who had qualified 22nd for Cadillac, was sent to the back of the field to start from the pit lane after the team made setup changes to his car under parc ferme conditions.
2026 Hungarian Grand Prix Race Results
The race itself delivered plenty of drama. Piastri jumped his teammate Norris at the start and led for the first half of the race, resisting team orders to hand the position back. The race turned when Piastri made contact with Carlos Sainz while lapping him, and a subsequent gearbox failure ended his afternoon. That handed Norris a lead he would not relinquish, and he crossed the line roughly fifteen seconds clear of Max Verstappen.

Hamilton's race result also came with an asterisk. He crossed the line in fourth but was handed a five second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, which dropped him behind teammate Leclerc and left him fifth in the final classification. Elsewhere in the points, Nico Hulkenberg's ninth place finish gave Audi its first points of the 2026 season, a milestone result for the team in its debut year as a full works outfit.
