NIHI Rote: A Barefoot Luxury Escape on the Edge of Indonesia
There are places that feel discovered rather than visited. Rote Island, the southernmost point of Indonesia, closer to the coast of Australia than to Bali, is one of them. And on the white sands of Bo'a Beach, facing one of the most celebrated waves in the region, sits NIHI Rote, a resort so new and so remote that arriving feels a little like being let in on a secret. I was fortunate to experience it during its first months, and I returned home certain that this is one of the most special places I have had the privilege to visit.
NIHI Rote is the long-awaited sister property to the legendary NIHI Sumba, the resort so beloved it has repeatedly been named among the finest in the world. In its very first year, NIHI Rote was named to Robb Report's 50 Greatest Luxury Hotels on Earth for 2026, an extraordinary honour for a property still in its opening chapter. Having now seen it with my own eyes, I understand exactly why.
If a journey to the edge of Indonesia is calling to you, I would be delighted to help you experience it. You can begin planning your NIHI escape here.

Getting to NIHI Rote
Let me be honest from the outset: reaching NIHI Rote is a journey, and that is precisely the point. This is not a place you stumble upon. Its remoteness is its magic, and the effort of arriving is rewarded the moment you do.
I travelled to Rote from Bali. At the time, my flights routed through Labuan Bajo, the gateway to the Komodo Islands, and then Kupang in West Timor, before the final short hop to Rote. Flight routings to this part of Indonesia do shift, and arranging them well is part of what I take care of for my clients, so the long travel day feels seamless rather than daunting.
From the small Rote airport, the resort is roughly a ninety-minute drive across the island's quiet, rugged roads, and it is a lovely introduction to Rote itself, all rolling green hills, glimpses of the coastline, and a pace of life that immediately begins to slow you down. We were met at the airport by the NIHI team with fresh snacks and a chilled coconut to sip, and our vehicle was an open safari-style truck that made the drive feel like the beginning of an adventure rather than a transfer.

A Journey Worth Building Around
Because getting to Rote is an undertaking, I always encourage clients to make the most of the journey by weaving in more of this extraordinary corner of Indonesia. A stay in Labuan Bajo, the gateway to the Komodo Islands, pairs beautifully at the start or end of a trip, with its dragons, its pink-sand beaches, and some of the finest diving and island cruising in the world.
And of course, there is NIHI Sumba. On my return, I travelled back through Kupang and onward via Sumba, and I cannot recommend enough the idea of combining the two NIHI properties into a single, seamless journey. NIHI Sumba is the original, the icon, with its famous ocean-swimming horses and its deeply rooted community spirit. To experience both the storied elder and its wild new sibling in one trip is, to my mind, the ultimate Indonesian escape, and exactly the kind of journey I love to design.

Arrival and My Villa
When we arrived on property, we were welcomed by our personal hosts, the warm and attentive team members who look after you throughout your stay. Any lingering tiredness from the journey melted away almost instantly.
I checked into my Ume Bo'a Beach Villa, a gorgeous one-bedroom sanctuary positioned directly before Bo'a Beach and its iconic wave. The villa was everything I hope for in barefoot luxury: soft natural linens, hand-woven ikat textiles, and subtle expressions of Rotenese heritage throughout, all built using traditional local craftsmanship and materials. Best of all was my own private plunge pool, where I could slip into the water and watch the waves roll in and the sun slip below the horizon. It is the kind of space that becomes, as NIHI beautifully puts it, your own home on the edge of Indonesia.

The Experiences
What I love about NIHI is that it invites you to do as much or as little as your heart desires. My days unfolded slowly, and each one held something memorable.
I took part in the Lagoon Escape, one of NIHI Rote's signature experiences, navigating up a mangrove river to reach a hidden, untouched lagoon at the heart of the island. It is the sort of quietly magical adventure that stays with you.
I also arranged a snorkelling excursion with the wonderful team at Rote Dive Adventures. While my friend went out for a two-tank dive, I snorkelled the vibrant reefs, and the marine life here is spectacular. Rote is surrounded by more than sixteen dive sites, so for clients who dive, this is a genuinely world-class destination.
And a note for the surfers among you, and I do have clients who plan entire trips around a wave: NIHI Rote sits directly in front of the legendary Bo'a Barrel, one of the most sought-after waves in the region. For a surfer, waking up with that view and paddling straight out from your villa is nothing short of a dream.

Wellness and Fitness at NIHI Rote
For those who like to keep moving even in paradise, NIHI Rote has a genuine commitment to wellness woven through the guest experience. The resort is home to a well-equipped fitness centre, with cardio equipment including treadmills, alongside a beautiful dedicated indoor yoga and movement space where daily classes are held. Through their NIHI Fit programme, you can join group or private sessions, so whether you want to maintain your training routine or simply flow through a gentle morning practice with the sound of the ocean nearby, the facilities are there.
What makes the wellness offering here special, though, is its depth. Visiting practitioners lead rotating movement and wellness programmes, from yoga to sessions focused on nervous system regulation, resilience, and performance, bringing a genuine richness to the experience. At the heart of it all is Meti Spa and the tranquil Spa Sanctuary, tucked into a lush, secluded corner of the property, where open-air treatment bales are nestled among the trees and a relaxation garden invites you to slow down completely. As the resort moves through its opening phases, this becomes one of the most serene wellness settings imaginable.
This is also part of why NIHI Rote, and its sister NIHI Sumba, are such extraordinary settings for a hosted wellness retreat. With visiting practitioners already part of the resort's DNA, intimate villa accommodation, and a landscape designed to slow you down and reconnect you with nature, these properties are made for the kind of transformational group experiences my retreat clients dream of. If you are a yoga teacher, wellness leader, or coach who has ever imagined hosting a retreat somewhere truly remarkable, you can learn more about hosting your own retreat with me here.
Even in a place this remote, there is no reason to pause your routine. The fitness centre at NIHI Rote is beautifully equipped, so you can move your body and then step straight out into paradise. Barefoot luxury does not mean leaving your wellness behind.
The dedicated yoga and movement space at NIHI Rote is where daily practice meets island stillness, a place to breathe, stretch, and arrive fully before the day unfolds. For the yoga teachers and wellness leaders among you, picture hosting your own retreat in a space like this.
Dining and an Evening I Will Not Forget
Meals at NIHI Rote centre on the Nammo Beach Club, where the focus is on beautiful, sustainably sourced island cooking, with charcoal-grilled dishes, rotisserie, and wood-fired fare. I do not eat seafood or fish, and I was so well looked after, with thoughtful alternatives prepared with genuine care, which speaks volumes about the kitchen and the level of personal attention here.
The highlight of my stay, though, was an experience dinner at the Rote Hospitality Academy. This is what makes NIHI Rote unlike anywhere else. Woven into the very heart of the resort is an academy where young Rotenese students learn the craft of world-class hospitality, moving from the classroom directly into moments of service shared with guests. Over dinner, we were treated to traditional local dances and music, and we learned about the academy and the students whose futures it is shaping. It was moving, joyful, and deeply authentic, a reminder that the finest luxury today carries a sense of purpose. I left that evening genuinely touched.

A Word on the Soft Opening
In the spirit of an honest review, NIHI Rote welcomed me during its soft opening and I want to share that openly, because it is part of what made the experience so special. During my stay, the spa was not yet open, so I enjoyed a lovely one-hour massage in the privacy of my own villa one afternoon, which was blissful. A handful of the resort's amenities were still coming to life.
Far from a drawback, there is something rare and wonderful about experiencing a place in its earliest chapter, when the service is being shaped in real time and you are welcomed not simply as a guest but as part of the story. That said, the resort is expected to be fully open by November 2026, with its spa, additional dining, and full wellness programming all in place, so those visiting now and in the months ahead will find the experience more complete with each passing season.

Why I Loved NIHI Rote
I adored my time at NIHI Rote. It has that rare and intoxicating combination of true remoteness, barefoot luxury, genuine warmth, and a deeper sense of purpose. It is a place for those who want to feel far away from everything, held in comfort and beauty, somewhere still wild and largely untouched. Whether you are a surfer chasing the Bo'a Barrel, a couple seeking seclusion, or a traveller drawn to places before the rest of the world arrives, NIHI Rote is extraordinary.
It is also, quite simply, the kind of place I became a travel advisor to share.
